What If I Told You that You Can Wear the Future?

Ever since the pandemic, most of our daily practices have moved over to the online world. The new normal is actually not only having to sanitize and wear masks but to see what you can bring from the outside into your own home. This has affected every industry, and the fashion industry is no exception. This all began with Mark Zuckerberg’s new vision of an all-digital “reality” named the Metaverse, which plans to bring our daily lives into customizable and more imaginative locations either through Augmented (AR) or Virtual Reality (VR). The announcement of this left all to question as to what direction our society will be heading, but the fashion industry sees this as an opportunity to be the first in line.

Through the online sandbox game, Roblox, popular brands such as Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren, and Gucci have since created explorable worlds and even in-game clothing for users to attain and even purchase. Moreover, the creation agency Virtual Brand Group has turned fast-fashion house Forever 21 into a permanent online store in Roblox’s vast world. With that being said, not only are the brands of today transcending into the digital realm, but it further gives us insight as to what our future will be like and leaves us to only ask how fast we can get there.

Now, this does not mean that we are going to start seeing less of physical stores of our favourite brands. A growing number of physical stores are starting to integrate e-commerce style features such as real-time reviews of products as well as augmented try-ons of certain pieces. As cryptocurrency continues to grow in public transactions and further cement its use as “normal” currency, there is a likeliness that the next store you enter might just cater to what’s within your crypto-wallet.

We’re only going to keep moving even faster from here, and the fashion industry has taken the chance to create something that is both captivating but also perhaps intimidating – not only to the current state of the industry but maybe even to yourself. Take it as food for thought!

The pandemic has changed the trajectory of almost every sector in the world and has forced everyone to adapt and find new solutions. The same can be observed in the medical field where the breaking down of the healthcare systems across countries gave rise to solutions that help with diagnosis using technology. Remote patient monitoring (RPM) technology has been developing over the past few years but saw a huge uptick in interest due to the pandemic. The use of such technology allows consumers to track their key vitals on-the-go, which alleviates pressure on hospitals and also reduces costs.  

The boom of RPM technology can be credited to the large investments made by non-medical companies and the enthusiasm of the medical industry.

Telecom companies such as A&T and Verizon are expanding their 5G services which would largely improve the continuous tracking of vitals by AI technologies. The leading tech players such as Apple, Google, Amazon and Microsoft are also integrating this technology into their devices which will rapidly expand the already $30 billion RPM market. 

RPM technology can not only provide an earlier diagnosis but also make medical services more accessible across the globe. It also assists the medical field by reducing costs and the pressure on medical professionals as there is a persistent shortage of doctors. The telehealth sector is here to stay with startups such as Huma, Element Science, Biofourmis and Somatix.

The Roadblock In A Woman’s Career

The word equality has been debated throughout history, especially regarding women in the workplace. According to McKinsey’s Women in the Workplace 2021, women are still stuck in their career journey as they are much less likely to receive promotions than their male counterparts. The report states that this bias is more prominent for technical roles where only 52 women are promoted to managerial roles for every 100 men.

Why does this matter?

    • Leadership and diversity contribute to the success of companies as there is a positive relationship between a company’s financial performance to diversity metrics. Companies with women well represented in the top roles are likely to earn up to 50% higher profits and share performance.
    • Bias in technical roles is also detrimental to the development of technology such as artificial intelligence. As these technologies become used for sensitive areas such as hiring, healthcare, criminal justice etc, the need for unbiased technology has become higher. A bias in the development can lead to dangerous outcomes with incorrect results.

 

How do we tackle this?

    • Women not only need to be more represented in entry-level roles but also be frequently promoted early on in their careers. This can be achieved with standardised clear cut skill requirements needed for promotions coupled with a transparent system in technology companies.  
    • Companies need to invest more in ensuring there are well-structured programs and resources for women early on in their careers to improve their technical and soft skills that are needed for professional development.
